Respectful. Inclusive. Person-Centred Care.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and comfortable when receiving massage therapy.
Affirming massage is more than providing treatment, it is about creating a therapeutic environment where people of all identities, bodies, and lived experiences feel genuinely welcomed. My goal is to provide evidence-informed massage therapy in a space built on trust, consent, compassion, and respect.
Whether you identify as transgender, non-binary, Two-Spirit, gender diverse, LGBTQIA2S+, or simply want a therapist who practices with an inclusive approach, you are welcome here.
What does affirming massage mean?
Affirming massage recognizes that every person’s relationship with their body is unique. Many factors, including identity, health conditions, disability, chronic pain, trauma, stress, aging, pregnancy, body image, and life experiences, shape how someone experiences touch and healthcare.
Affirming care means meeting you where you are without assumptions.
That includes:
- Respecting your name and pronouns
- Using inclusive, person-centred language
- Asking rather than assuming
- Honouring your privacy and boundaries
- Explaining treatment before it begins
- Obtaining informed consent throughout treatment
- Supporting your goals, not imposing mine
Your massage is always tailored to your comfort level and your individual needs.
Massage for transgender and gender-diverse clients
Transgender and gender-diverse people may experience unique physical demands that can influence muscle tension, posture, pain, and stress.
Some clients may experience discomfort related to:
- Chest binding or compression garments
- Tucking or packing
- Voice training and neck tension
- Surgical recovery (when medically appropriate)
- Hormone-related changes in muscle or connective tissue
- Chronic stress associated with navigating healthcare or discrimination
- General muscle tension, headaches, back pain, or anxiety, just like anyone else
Massage therapy cannot change gender dysphoria or replace gender-affirming medical care. However, it may provide meaningful support by helping reduce muscle tension, improving comfort, promoting relaxation, and supporting nervous system regulation.
A trauma-informed approach
Many people, regardless of identity, have experienced situations where they did not feel safe, respected, or heard within the community and at times healthcare settings.
Because of this, every treatment is guided by:
- Clear communication
- Ongoing consent
- Choice and collaboration
- Respect for personal boundaries
- The option to pause or change treatment at any time
You are always in control of your massage.
Every body is different
There is no “typical” massage treatment. Some people enjoy deeper pressure. Others prefer gentle, calming techniques. Some like conversation. Others appreciate quiet.
Some people choose to avoid certain areas of the body. Others have specific treatment goals.
Every session is individualized because every body is different.
An evidence-informed approach
Research increasingly recognizes that affirming healthcare environments contribute to better health experiences for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Studies suggest that respectful communication, inclusive practices, and culturally responsive care improve trust, reduce barriers to accessing healthcare, and encourage ongoing engagement with health services.
Massage therapy research specifically involving transgender and gender-diverse populations is still emerging. Current evidence suggests massage may support many of the same outcomes seen in the general population, including:
- Reduced muscle tension
- Reduced stress
- Improved relaxation
- Better sleep
- Improved body comfort
- Reduced pain
- Enhanced overall well-being
Researchers emphasize that these benefits are likely greatest when massage is delivered in a safe, affirming, and person-centred environment where clients feel respected and in control of their care.
My commitment to you
